What a Navy field engineer learns about customers
The crew is the customer, the training is the deliverable, and the job is not finished when the equipment works.
The first thing you learn doing field service on a warship is that fixing the equipment is the easy half. I can isolate a fault on a transmitter. What decides whether the visit actually worked is whether the people who operate that transmitter can keep it running once I am on a plane home.
The customer is whoever has to live with the result
In SPY Radar Readiness Assessments the customer is the ship's crew. They did not choose the equipment, they cannot return it, and they are going to sea with it whether or not it is convenient. That changes what a good outcome looks like. A repair that only I understand is not a repair, it is a deferral.
It also changes who you have to convince. On any given visit the people with a stake in the plan include the technicians doing the work, the chief who owns their time, officers accountable for the ship's readiness, program managers funding the maintenance, and contractor representatives with their own scope. None of them report to me. The only way the work happens is if they all agree on the same plan, which means the technical answer is necessary and nowhere near sufficient.
Training is the deliverable, not the follow-up
Every assessment ends with hands-on training. Not a slide deck — the crew doing the checks on their own equipment while someone who knows the failure modes watches. It is the part of the job I would defend hardest if someone tried to cut it for time, because it is the only part that survives my departure.
This is the piece that translates most directly to selling medical devices. An associate rep in an operating room is doing the same job under a different name: be credible on the technical detail, be useful to the people actually holding the instrument, and leave the staff able to do it without you next week.
Show up before it is urgent
The emergent trips — short-notice travel to a ship that has lost capability — are the visible part of the work. The expeditionary repair availability was the opposite: months of coordinating engineering, supply chain and contracting so that when people arrived, the material was already there.
Nobody writes a commendation for the parts that showed up on time. But the trips that go badly are almost never the ones where the engineering was wrong.
